Life Sentence is a short story that appears in the collection Led Astray. It is narrated by Daniel Boyd a member of the Boyd family but not of it's Cabal.
Daniel Boyd has six months to live, inoperable cancer, he believes in finding more than just a cure to cancer but a cure to mortality as well. Experiments on making someone a Vampire with no risk don't work. Eventually he finds a zombification method that has promise, he'll go to any lengths to survive, even suggesting offering up his employees as test subjects. Eventually he gets what he wanted but at a terrible price
